Our Heritage

Founded by freelance object conservator Carla Learoyd, Clear Conservation offers conservation and restoration services for gilded and decorative surfaces including gilding, painted plaster and stone.

Having always had an interest in crafting, over the last 15 years Carla has run several businesses including Soft Furnishings, Garden Design and Landscaping, Furniture Painting and Upholstery, undertaking relevant training in each of these disciplines to ensure she was equipped with the necessary skill levels required.

Freelance upholstery work within the conservation workshops at Windsor Castle exposed Carla to the wonderful world of conservation. This discovery led her to study for a BA (Hons) in Conservation of Stone, Wood and Decorative Surfaces at The City and Guilds of London Art School. During study and since graduating, Carla has focussed much of her work on the conservation of frames, upholstered furniture, gilded surfaces and paint on stone and plaster.

Upholstered furniture

In 2016, Carla undertook accredited AMUSF training in modern and traditional upholstery, gaining a distinction in all levels.

Her attention to detail and pursuit of perfection works in tandem with conservation and restoration to ensure all commissions are completed with suitable consideration to the historic significance of each piece. We know how treasured such items can be.
